How Invisalign Works

Invisalign differs from traditional braces by using clear, customized plastic aligners to gently and gradually straighten teeth instead of metal brackets and wires. Every two weeks, you’ll graduate to the next series of trays in your treatment until you reach your final alignment goal. Additionally, throughout your treatment, you’ll come into our office for a follow-up appointment every six to eight weeks so Dr. Gammenthaler can make sure you’re on-track with your treatment timeline.

The Benefits of Invisalign

Opting for Invisalign clear aligners instead of traditional metal braces allows you to enjoy a number of benefits throughout your treatment, including:

  • Easier to brush and floss your teeth, reducing your risk of cavities and other oral health problems.
  • Ability to eat all of your favorite foods, just remember to take out your aligners beforehand!
  • Smooth plastic aligners are more comfortable, preventing irritation or friction on the inside of your lips or cheeks.
  • Ability to treat a variety of oral health problems, including overbite, underbite, cross bite, and open bite.

Who Can Invisalign Help?

Woman holding Invisalign in the shape of a heart

Invisalign continues to gain popularity in Rogers as a clear alternative to traditional braces because of its unique advantages. The transparent plastic trays fit snugly over your arches to exert the right amount of pressure to shift your teeth to their ideal spaces.

However, that doesn’t mean it’s automatically the best solution to meet everyone’s unique needs. Continue reading to learn more about who might be a good candidate for this treatment, and feel free to contact us for additional information.

Crowded Teeth

You might think of overcrowded teeth as more of an aesthetic concern, but unfortunately, they can be harder to brush and floss if their surfaces overlap. This increases your vulnerability to common dental concerns, like cavities and gum disease. Invisalign can ensure that everything sits evenly side by side to avoid potential problems.

Gaps Between Teeth

Wide spaces in your smile can trap leftover food or other debris, which attracts harmful germs that can cause issues. Furthermore, they leave sections of your connective tissues unprotected, which can result in injury.

Thankfully, Dr. Gammenthaler can use these transparent trays to close the gaps in your grin to boost its appearance and protect your oral health.

Overbite

It’s natural to have a slight overbite, but if your upper arch juts too far beyond the bottom one, you might develop speech impediments or struggle to bite and chew. You could even wear down your enamel prematurely, increasing the risk of developing decay or other damage.

With the help of buttons, elastics, and other accessories, Invisalign can help correct your bite alignment to preserve your dental condition.

Underbite

If your upper teeth fit inside your lower teeth when you close your mouth, then you likely have an underbite. Whether the result of genetics, an injury, or thumb-sucking as a child, it can cause challenges with eating and speaking, or contribute to the development of sleep apnea because it can block your airways at night.

Dr. Gammenthaler can use clear aligners to make appropriate adjustments to your jaw position and preserve your grin.

Crossbite

If some of your upper teeth fit inside your lower teeth but others rest in front of them, then you might be suffering from a crossbite. This can unfortunately contribute to long-term concerns, like jaw stiffness or pain, tooth decay, gum disease, headaches, and facial asymmetry.

Correcting your malocclusion with Invisalign can alleviate aches and avoid many common oral issues.

Open Bite

Those with an open bite have teeth that don’t touch together at all when they bite down, which can excessively erode the backs of their enamel and cause dental problems. Our team can use Invisalign to bring your upper and lower arches together properly to correct your bite pattern.

Understanding the Cost of Invisalign

Are you interested in getting an estimate of the cost of Invisalign in Rogers? If so, the best thing to do is schedule a consultation with us so we can learn all about your dental history, needs, and goals! You can also read on to learn more on the topic, including the factors that play a role in the price and whether or not dental insurance providers typically cover a portion of it.

Factors That Affect the Cost of Invisalign

During your consultation with Dr. Gammenthaler, he will review your dental history, assess the severity of your case, and complete a visual exam. From there, he can determine:

  • If any preliminary treatments are needed
  • If you’re a candidate for single-arch treatment
  • How many aligners need to be made
  • If rubber bands, attachments, or buttons are needed
  • The type of retainer needed to preserve your results

With all of this information, he can provide you with an estimate of the cost. Our team will also review the financial solutions available as well as what you can do to prevent additional fees down the line, like wearing your aligners for a minimum of 20 hours a day, every day.

Invisalign vs. Mail-In Aligners: Which Costs More?

Mail-in aligners are marketed as cheaper, and that’s true – the upfront cost is lower. However, that doesn’t mean they are worth your valuable time and money. After all, alternatives like these usually bypass the initial exam, ask patients to take their own impressions (which is difficult to do correctly), and aren’t overseen by licensed dental professionals. As a result, many patients experience worsened misalignment and even serious dental injuries. For all of these reasons, we strongly recommend choosing Invisalign, even if it requires a higher upfront investment.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Invisalign?

Sometimes, yes! So, if you are currently insured, take some time to read through the fine print on your plan. If you need any help understanding or utilizing your coverage, let us know; we’re in-network providers with Aetna, Humana, United Healthcare, MetLife, and several others. So, we can help with almost every step of the process – from getting an estimate of your out-of-pocket expenses to submitting the paperwork.

Options for Making Invisalign Affordable

But what if you don’t have dental insurance? Does that mean your only choice is to pay for the entire cost of Invisalign in one lump sum? Fortunately, the answer is “no.” With third-party financiers, like CareCredit, you can choose a payment plan that works with your budget. That way, you pay for your orthodontic treatment in smaller, more manageable installments instead.

Invisalign FAQs

How Long Does Invisalign Take?

The average Invisalign treatment timeline is only 12-18 months. Plus, patients with mild cases of misalignment often achieve the results they desire in just 4-8 months! This is a considerable improvement over traditional braces, which often take 2-3 years.

If you are interested in finding out how long your clear aligner treatment will take, the best thing to do is to schedule a consultation with our cosmetic dentist in Rogers, Dr. Gammenthaler. That way, he can determine if any preliminary services are needed, assess the severity of your case, and create your custom treatment plan.

Does Invisalign Hurt?

This is a very common question, especially among our patients who had traditional braces as a child or teenager. Fortunately, Invisalign is considerably more comfortable. There are a few reasons for this, including that the aligners are crafted from smooth plastic and there aren’t monthly adjustment appointments. To put it simply, you shouldn’t let fear of discomfort stop you from pursuing your dream smile.

Is There Anything I Can’t Eat with Invisalign?

Although there aren’t any dietary restrictions with Invisalign, there are some foods we recommend avoiding. For example, raw almonds, croutons, and hard pretzels are all crunchy foods that can cause a tooth to chip or an attachment to break. Similarly, taffy and caramel-filled candies can lead to tooth decay, which can negatively impact your oral health and your orthodontic treatment. Ultimately, the best thing to do is eat mostly healthy, well-balanced meals throughout your teeth-straightening journey.

What Happens After Invisalign?

After you’ve progressed through your entire series of aligners and achieved the results you desire, we will take impressions of your teeth and have a custom retainer made. This is important because upwards of 50% of patients experience orthodontic relapse in the years following their orthodontic treatment. Wearing your retainer as directed (usually each night while you sleep) will help prevent that from happening.

How Should I Clean My Invisalign Aligners?

Let’s start with what you should NOT do: do not clean your aligners with bleach, scrub them with toothpaste, or soak them in mouthwash. Instead, use a damp, soft-bristled toothbrush and clear, mild dishwashing liquid to gently remove plaque, saliva, and other debris from the surface. If you’d like, you can also place them in a cup filled with some slightly warm water and a packet of cleaning crystals; 15 minutes is all it takes to give them a good clean!

Can I Drink Coffee With Invisalign?

You can drink coffee throughout your orthodontic treatment, but you need to remove your aligners first. Otherwise, they can warp or stain. Plus, doing so can trap the residue against your teeth, increasing your risk of decay in the process.
